Alex Urgell was born in Barcelona and relocated to Havana, Cuba at the age of three. At age seven he began his classical ballet training (as well as piano and art history) at the National School of Arts in Havana. Upon graduating in 1985, Mr. Urgell joined the National Ballet of Cuba. He Later travelled to Europe and danced with the National Ballet of Spain, The Opera Theater in Vienna, Espejos Modern Dance Company in Madrid, and Bejart Ballet Lausanne under Maurice Bejart in France. He also taught at the E’cole Du Le Dance et Music (Nantes France). He later worked as a choreographer and Afro-Cuban music consultant with the National Chorus of Senegal in 1996 in Africa. Mr. Urgell collaborated, choreographed and composed music for several Dance Companies in Europe, North America and South America.

He relocated to the U.S. in 1997 and worked for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City. He also worked as a choreographer and composer for Nathan Trace Modern Dance Company and choreographed four Off-Broadway Shows while in New York. Mr. Urgell is also a painter and has had several exhibitions in NYC and Philadelphia. This is Alex Urgell's first season with Napoles Ballet.
